CLIENT: Crenshaw High School, LAUSD
PROJECT: New School Cafeteria
BUDGET: $222,613
PROJECT MANAGER: Sergio Torres
SCOPE: The scope of this project required the complete demolition and removal of the schools’ existing kitchen and the installation of new, state-of-the-art equipment - including liquid crystal display (LCD) monitors that allowed for line flow monitoring by the Cafeteria Manager. With the completion of this project, not only were students able to get through the line and eat in half the time it did with the previous outmoded kitchen, our work also provided a more wholesome and clean atmosphere for dining.
CHALLENGES: Crenshaw High School is one of the most overcrowded schools in LAUSD. Because there are 2600 students it was important that we keep a tight schedule in order to have the school open and ready for the students each and every morning. With numerous trades involved - electrical, plumbing, ceiling tile, floor tile, site work, painting and drywall - the biggest challenge was to maneuver everyone’s schedule to accommodate an open and functioning school.
SUMMARY: By modernizing the kitchen we created a faster and more efficient lunch line for the students, giving them more time to eat a good lunch. The result was that students returned to their classes energized and ready to learn. Prior to the modernization, roughly 300 kids per day had to resort to vending machines because they were unable to make it through the lunch line in the time permitted.
